How This Tool Works
The Dog Food Calorie Calculator uses the scientific Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula. This represents the basic energy needed to maintain life (breathing, heart rate, digestion) while at rest.
RER = 70 × (Body Weight in kg)⁰·⁷⁵
The MER Multiplier (Life Stage Guide)
Once the RER is established, we apply a Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) multiplier based on your dog's specific life stage and activity level:
- Neutered Adult (1.6x): The standard baseline for most domestic pets.
- Weight Loss (1.0x): A strict multiplier used under vet supervision to reduce adipose tissue.
- Growth/Puppy (2.0x - 3.0x): High-energy needs for bone development and rapid growth.
- Working Dog (2.0x - 5.0x): For sheepdogs, sled dogs, or agility competitors.
"Buddy," an 8-year-old Labrador, weighs 80 lbs and has slowed down significantly.
- Current Intake: 1,600 kcal/day (Neutered Adult factor)
- The Issue: Buddy is gaining weight and stressing his joints.
- The Fix: Switching to a Sedentary (1.2x) factor reduces
his intake to ~1,250 kcal.
Within three months, Buddy lost 5 lbs, significantly improving his mobility and heart
health.
Strategic Feeding FAQ
Try adding low-calorie "fillers" like plain canned pumpkin (not pie mix) or green beans to their bowl. These add volume and fiber without significant calories.
For weight loss goals, weekly weigh-ins are best. For maintenance, a monthly check is sufficient to ensure their MER multiplier is still accurate.
